PageGlimpse for website screenshots
Just started using the PageGlimpse API to show thumbnails of websites I reference, like the one above. Check out their site (http://www.pageglimpse.com/) for more details and documentation. Very very simple!
20 Great Stitched Panorama Examples from Digital Photography School
Panoramas are something I’m trying to learn more about and found DPS’s 20 Great Stitched Panorama Examples a nice display of how varied panoramas can be. From massive Air Force transport planes to the standard (but breathtaking!) landscapes (mountains, the Grand Canyon, etc) to simple room shots (even a bathroom shot!), the breadth of possibilities is more than I originally thought. In case you’re interested, my simple first panorama was taken at the Naval Academy bridge.
Data.gov open for business (and OECD seminar plug)
So, Data.gov is finally open and serving up links to data. I haven’t had a chance to dig in, yet, but since 3 of my favorite blogs (FlowingData, ProgrammableWeb, and DataVisualization) covered it, I thought I should at least mention it here. P.S. Although not explicitly tied to data.gov, keep in mind the upcoming OECD Seminar on Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics into Knowledge in DC July 15th and 16th.
Ross Ching's new time-lapse photography: Little Bribes
[Death Cab for Cutie - Little Bribes from Ross Ching on Vimeo.] Very impressive time-lapse of Death Cab for Cutie’s Little Bribes by Ross Ching – http://rossching.com/little-bribes/. Shot almost completely in LA, he describes how he put together his video (and states that he isn’t affiliated with the band) on his website. Treat yourself to a few minutes of impressive creativity. Wow. P.S. This has to be the dumbest name for a band (but what do I know?
8 Guidelines To Taking Panoramic Photos With Any Camera
Digital Photography School recently published 8 Guidelines To Taking Panoramic Photos With Any Camera. I’m trying to learn more about panoramas, including using software (such as Photoshop, Autostitch, AutoPano, and even Pano for the iPhone) to generate panoramas. These 8 tips are helpful, and should make any panoramic photographs more attractive.
Bottle-cap tripod: Seriously???
Don’t know whether to take this seriously or not… Photojojo is selling a bottle-cap tripod [http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/bottle-cap-tripod]. For $10, even if it were a joke, it’s pretty harmless. And if they’re serious, it’s a good deal. :)
My Favorites: Photo Blogs
I was asked recently from a friend which Photography websites (and blogs) I found helpful, being the pretty-new-to-photography amateur. It’s difficult to separate some photography sites from design sites, so you may see a mix here. Anyway, enough with the preamble… Here are the home sites – you’ll find the link to their RSS feeds there: Smashing Magazine [http://www.smashingmagazine.com/] One of the first blogs I read; always interesting and different (at least to me :) Digital Photography School [http://www.
Transparency: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Wow! Some of the things I never think of, like where plastic trash goes – 20 billion lbs of it every year! Read this post on GOOD magazine’s blog, Transparency: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, to find out more. Very scary!
Webby Nominees: 911
Porsche won the People’s Voice Webby award in the Automotive category due to their breathtaking app. Makes me want to go buy one already! (Well, that was true before I saw the app!)
How Google and Facebook are using R : Dataspora Blog
I’m a little behind the times, but I just saw this posting of how Google and Facebook are using R, my favorite new tool: How Google and Facebook are using R : Dataspora Blog. From the CRAN network to the easy chart/graph construction, R makes data analysis dangerously easy. Maybe too easy??? I mean, all those formulae have to mean something, right? I just scratch the surface of R with my tinkering, but it is clearly a very potent tool for crunching lots of numbers.
